Our Providers

Psychologists specialize in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of psychological disorders and problems. In most jurisdictions, psychologists are required to hold doctoral degrees (either a Ph.D. or Psy.D.). To obtain their doctorates, psychologists typically complete 4-6 years of coursework, clinical placements in a variety of mental health settings, multi-year research projects, and a 1-year residency program involving full-time clinical work. After earning a doctoral degree, psychologists complete a final year of supervised practice, during which they receive ongoing supervision.

In some jurisdictions (e.g., Nova Scotia), mental health providers can become psychologists after completing a 2-year Master's degree and longer periods of supervised practice. In other jurisdictions, individuals with this level of training earn the title “Psychological Associate” (see below).

Compared with other mental health professionals who provide talk therapy, psychologists have the ability to make and convey to clients mental health diagnoses (in some jurisdictions).

Clinical Psychologist (Supervised Practice). Clinical psychologists in supervised practice have received their doctorate degree. They are in the process of writing their licensing exams and completing a final year (1500 hours) of supervised clinical practice. Nellie providers at this stage of training will have had about 5 years of experience assessing and treating individuals with mental health concerns. The terminology used to describe this stage of practice may vary based on jurisdiction.

PhD/PsyD Student. Some Nellie providers are currently working toward their doctorate degrees in psychology. These providers have completed a 2-year master's degree in psychology. Depending on how far along the individual is in their doctoral program, they will have 1-3 years of experience treating individuals with mental health concerns.

In some jurisdictions (e.g., Ontario), the title “Psychological Associate” is used to refer to mental health providers who have completed a Master's degree in psychology, followed by a longer period (e.g., 4 years) of supervised practice.

Psychological Associate (Supervised Practice). Some Nellie providers have completed their master's degrees and are completing their required years of supervised practice by a licensed/registered psychologist or psychological associate to independently practice.

Clinical social workers are trained in the assessment and treatment of mental health difficulties. Social workers typically hold a master's degree (MSW). Although specific requirements may vary, MSW programs typically take 2 years to finish and involve coursework, writing a thesis, and the completion of a field placement. Social workers must be registered with the college of social work in their state or province.

Depending on the jurisdiction, there are different types of licensed professionals who typically hold a master's degree in some program that includes mental health and wellness (e.g., counseling, education, mental health/additions). These programs vary in the topics they emphasize (e.g., career counseling, addictions) and the severity of problems that they emphasize on the continuum from mental wellness and development to severe mental illness. Most licensing/registration boards require some minimum number of supervised hours before independent practice.

Psychiatrists are medical doctors. Typically, psychiatrists complete a 4-year medical doctor (MD) degree (in which they receive general medical training), followed by a 4-5-year psychiatry residency. During their residency, psychiatrists gain experience working with individuals with severe mental health difficulties, often in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Psychiatrists specialize in the assessment and medical management of mental health problems, including prescribing medications. Some psychiatrists also provide therapy.

Nurse practitioners (NPs) are registered nurses with additional education, training, and experience. They have typically completed a Master's degree in nursing, followed by several years of clinical practice as a registered nurse and an additional NP educational program. NPs can diagnose mental health conditions and prescribe medications.
